Custom Digital Rugby Scoreboard for Mt Smart Stadium
WiPath Communications designed and installed a custom Digital Rugby Scoreboard at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland, providing a high-resolution LED scoring and timing system for the rugby field.
The LED Rugby Scoreboard is regularly used for rugby training and practice sessions, including training activities associated with the New Zealand Warriors.
Rather than supplying a standard off-the-shelf scoreboard, WiPath developed a custom Rugby Scoreboard Software solution specifically around the requirements of the rugby field. The system allows the operator to update scores, team names, match timing and additional game time in real time through an easy-to-use interface.
The project combines a 3.91mm outdoor LED display, custom scoreboard software, flexible control options and an economical boundary-wall mounting system to create a practical and professional Sports LED Scoreboard.

3.91mm LED Rugby Scoreboard
The scoreboard uses a 3.91mm pixel pitch full-colour LED display measuring 2250mm wide × 1250mm high.
The large-format LED screen provides a clear digital display for rugby scores, team names and match timing.
The scoreboard interface shown in the project installation is designed to clearly separate the key information:
- Match clock
- Half indicator
- Home team
- Away team
- Team scores
- Large, easy-to-read graphics
The full-colour LED technology also provides flexibility to display different colours, graphics and scoreboard layouts according to the requirements of the rugby field.
Custom Rugby Scoreboard Software
One of the most important features of this project is the custom-designed Rugby Scoreboard Software developed by WiPath.
The software was created specifically for rugby applications rather than relying on a generic scoreboard controller.
The system gives the operator flexibility to update the scoreboard in real time during a training session or match.

Custom Rugby Match Timer
The match timer was specifically developed as part of the Rugby Scoreboard Software.
The operator can configure the clock according to the requirements of the rugby session, including the first and second halves.
The system also provides the ability to add extra minutes when required, allowing the scoreboard to accommodate different rugby game and training scenarios.
This gives coaches, officials and operators greater flexibility compared with a fixed-function electronic scoreboard.
This gives the school a robust Outdoor Digital LED Sign designed for long-term use.
Extra-Large Practice Timer
A particularly useful feature developed by WiPath is the additional practice timer mode.
The software allows the operator to switch between two different display views:
1. Rugby Match Scoreboard
- The main scoreboard view displays:
- Match clock
- Half information
- Team names
- Team scores
- Rugby scoreboard graphics
2. Extra-Large Practice Timer
The second view transforms the LED display into a large, bold practice timer.
The timer uses an extra-large display format designed for visibility across the rugby training ground. The large numbers are intended to remain clearly visible from approximately 200 metres, making it useful for coaches and players during training sessions.
This dual-purpose design means the same LED Sports Scoreboard can be used for both rugby match-style scoring and everyday training activities.
Cloud and Local Scoreboard Control
The scoreboard system was designed to provide flexible control options.
A dedicated controller allows the display input to be switched between different sources, including:
- Cloud-based scoreboard control
- Local computer
- Laptop
- HDMI input
This provides flexibility for stadium staff and operators.
The scoreboard can be controlled through the custom software using a web browser, while HDMI connectivity provides an additional local input option when required.
Economical Rugby Scoreboard Installation
The Digital Scoreboard was installed directly onto the existing boundary wall of the rugby field.
Rather than constructing a separate ground foundation, WiPath developed a compact and economical custom steel mounting system.
The LED scoreboard is supported by two vertical flat steel mounting plates, positioned on either side of the display.
Each mounting plate is welded to a horizontal base flange, creating a rigid support assembly. The base flanges are then securely fixed to the existing concrete boundary wall using DynaBolts.
The LED display is secured to the rear mounting points of the steel support structure.
This approach provided a strong and practical mounting solution while keeping the installation compact and economical.
